Snoring

Around half of us snore occasionally, and for some it has become a regular part of the night. It often disturbs the person lying next to you more than the one who is snoring — but good sleep matters for both of you. That is why it is worth taking a closer look.
Where the sound comes from
Snoring occurs when air has difficulty passing freely through the throat during sleep. When we lie down and relax, the tongue falls back slightly and soft tissue can vibrate. Excess weight, alcohol, and tobacco can all intensify the effect.
When breathing pauses during sleep
Many regular snorers experience brief interruptions in their breathing during the night. This is called sleep apnoea, and it disrupts sleep to the point where you wake unrefreshed. If we suspect this may be the case, we will guide you towards a more thorough assessment — it is important to get clarity on this.
How we help
For snoring and mild sleep apnoea, we can fit an oral appliance that holds the lower jaw slightly forward, giving the airway more space. We take the time to find the right fit, so it feels comfortable to sleep in — and you can wake up feeling more rested.
Questions & answers
FAQ
When is snoring more than just snoring?
If you hold your breath or have silent pauses during sleep, and wake up tired despite a full night's rest, it may be a sign of sleep apnoea. This should be investigated further, and we are happy to help point you in the right direction.
Can an oral appliance help?
For many people with snoring and mild sleep apnoea, a mandibular advancement splint that holds the lower jaw slightly forward can make a noticeable difference. We fit it carefully to ensure it sits comfortably.
