Wisdom teeth are the last to emerge, and there is not always enough room for them. As they push up through the gum it is common to experience periodic soreness. Often this settles on its own — and when it doesn’t, we take a calm look at what is best.
When inflammation develops
While a wisdom tooth is breaking through, a small pocket of gum tissue can form over the tooth. Bacteria collect here easily, which can lead to inflammation with soreness and swelling. Rinsing with lukewarm salt water can help ease the symptoms. To assess how the tooth is positioned and whether there is enough space, we take an X-ray.
How we can help
We take our time to assess whether the wisdom tooth can stay in place or whether it is best to remove it. If it only causes problems occasionally, we can often simply monitor it. If it keeps flaring up, we discuss extraction — a procedure carried out gently and with thorough anaesthesia. Should you experience acute swelling or pain, you can always call before 9.00 am and receive a same-day appointment.
Questions & answers
FAQ
Do wisdom teeth always need to be removed?
No. If they are well positioned and cause no problems, they can stay. We only recommend removal if they become repeatedly inflamed, are difficult to keep clean, or lack sufficient space. An X-ray shows us exactly how they are lying.
What can I do if my gum is sore and inflamed?
Rinsing with lukewarm salt water can ease the discomfort while the inflammation is present. If it persists, or if you develop swelling or pain, please call us — you can always get an urgent same-day appointment if you call before 9.00 am.
