Filling
When decay has taken a bite out of your tooth, a filling builds it back up — in a colour that blends right in.

Most people have one or more fillings. A filling replaces the tooth structure lost to decay: we remove the affected tissue and rebuild the tooth so it is whole again and can chew comfortably. Nothing lasts forever — fillings included — so if an old filling has developed a crack or shows signs of wear, it is worth having it checked.
Tooth-coloured composite
Today we use composite that bonds actively to the tooth. This means we only need to remove the decayed tissue and can leave the healthy part of the tooth intact. The material is applied in layers, cured, and polished so the filling blends in naturally and remains unseen.
Old silver fillings
Silver amalgam fillings have been in use for over a hundred years and are very durable. Over time, however, they can expand and cause small cracks in the enamel — often without any noticeable symptoms until a piece of the tooth breaks away. If we spot signs of this, we will discuss replacing the filling at a convenient moment before matters progress that far.
Questions & answers
FAQ
Can you see a filling?
Rarely. We use tooth-coloured composite that bonds to the tooth and is shade-matched to it. Most fillings are virtually invisible.
How long does a filling last?
A well-placed filling typically lasts many years. Decay at the margin is the most common reason a filling needs replacing — which is why we monitor them at your check-ups.
