Root Canal Treatment

When the nerve inside a tooth becomes inflamed, root canal treatment can save the tooth — and relieve the pain.

During root canal treatment, we clean the narrow canals inside the tooth root of inflamed tissue and bacteria. Once the canals are clean and dry, we fill them with a dense rubber material and seal the tooth. In this way, a tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted can stay in place and continue to function.

How it works

We begin with an X-ray so we can see the shape of the root, then administer thorough anaesthesia before we start. The rest is careful, unhurried work: we clean, measure, and rinse the canals until they are completely clear, then seal the tooth tightly. Most of it comes down to precision and patience — not speed.

Afterwards

The majority of root canal treatments are successful, and the tooth settles down within a short time. Because a root-treated tooth becomes more brittle, we often recommend a crown to protect it from biting pressure. If treatment does not succeed on the first attempt, there are still options available — including a retrograde root canal treatment.

Questions & answers

FAQ

Does root canal treatment hurt?

The procedure is carried out under local anaesthesia, and most patients find it far less dramatic than they expected. Afterwards, the tooth may feel a little tender for a couple of days.

Why do you often recommend a crown afterwards?

A root-treated tooth becomes more brittle and tolerates less biting pressure. A crown wraps around the tooth and protects it, helping it last much longer.
