Many people occasionally experience a brief, sharp discomfort from something cold, warm, or sweet. It is rarely a sign of anything serious, but it can be bothersome in daily life — and it is almost always something we can do something about.

Where the sensitivity comes from

Above the gum line, the tooth is covered by a hard layer of enamel that protects against cold and bacteria. Beneath the enamel lies the softer dentine, with thousands of microscopic channels connected to the tooth’s nerve. When these channels become exposed — due to gum recession or enamel wear — cold and sweet foods can cause the familiar twinge.

How we help

We begin by identifying the cause, as this points the way to the solution. If the sensitivity is caused by brushing too hard, we calmly work on technique together. We can also coat the sensitive surfaces with fluoride treatments or a small filling, and guide you on a toothpaste that reduces sensitivity over time. As a rule, it does not take much before daily life becomes comfortable again.

Questions & answers

FAQ

Why have my teeth suddenly become sensitive?

Sensitivity most often occurs when the sensitive part of the tooth beneath the enamel becomes exposed — for example due to gum recession or wear. We identify the cause and help you reduce the discomfort.

Can a special toothpaste help?

For many people, a toothpaste for sensitive teeth makes a difference over time. We advise you on what suits your situation and check whether there is an underlying cause that needs to be addressed.
