Retrograde Root Canal Treatment
When a root canal is not enough, we can remove the infection at the root tip and save the tooth.

When a standard root canal treatment fails to clear the infection, there is still an option before the tooth must be extracted. With a retrograde root canal treatment, we take the opposite approach: we remove the infected root tip and seal the root canal from below. This allows us to reach the infection that was beyond reach the first time.
Why it may be necessary
Inside a tooth root, small lateral branches run through the canal that are difficult to clean and fill completely. If bacteria remain there, the infection can live on — often silently, without you noticing anything. That is why we sometimes only discover it on an X-ray during a routine check-up.
A precise procedure
The procedure is performed under anaesthesia and in a clean, isolated field. We expose the root tip, remove the infected tissue, and place a tight seal from below. It is meticulous, careful work, and outcomes are good for most patients. Afterwards, we will give you guidance to take home so the area can heal undisturbed.
Questions & answers
FAQ
Why can a root canal treatment be insufficient?
Root canals have fine lateral branches that are difficult to reach and clean completely. If bacteria remain there, the infection can persist even after a successful root canal treatment.
Can you tell that something is wrong?
Not always. Only a small proportion of cases produce obvious symptoms such as swelling or tenderness. Often the infection is first detected on an X-ray.
