Mouth and body are connected. Your general health affects your teeth, jaw, chewing muscles, and jaw joint — and conversely, the condition of your teeth can affect the rest of your body. That is why we want to know you as a whole person, not just your teeth.

Why we ask

The connection runs both ways. Serious gum inflammation can put a strain on the heart and circulatory system, and uncontrolled diabetes can worsen when there is also inflammation in the mouth. Knowing your health helps us create a plan that takes all of you into account.

When medication plays a role

Many types of medication leave their mark on the mouth — several can cause dry mouth, which increases the risk of cavities. Some heart medications can alter the appearance of the gums, certain bone-strengthening treatments are relevant to healing around implants, and blood-thinning medication is something we keep in mind during a tooth extraction. That is why we ask calmly before we begin.
