A dry mouth is more than just an uncomfortable sensation. Saliva has an important role to play: it rinses the mouth clean, neutralises acid, and helps keep your teeth healthy. When saliva is lacking, it is worth looking more closely at the cause — and taking extra good care of your teeth in the meantime.

What may lie behind it

• Side effects of medication, especially when taking several types at once
• Age, as the salivary glands often produce a little less over the years
• Certain illnesses, including Sjögren’s syndrome
• Treatments in the head and neck region

There is a difference between feeling dry-mouthed and actually having reduced saliva production, and a measurement of saliva output can clarify the picture.
