Acid erosion occurs when acid from food and drink gradually dissolves the mineral content of tooth enamel. It is a widespread and growing problem — particularly because many people, including children and young adults, consume considerable amounts of sugary and acidic drinks. The damage happens quietly, but it can be stopped.
Where the acid comes from
- Fizzy drinks, cola, squash, and fruit juice with high acid content
- Frequent consumption of sour fruit
- Acid reflux from the stomach
- Certain types of medication
As enamel wears away, teeth can become sensitive to cold and tender when brushing.
How to protect your teeth
- Drink acidic beverages quickly or through a straw, and avoid swishing them around your mouth
- Choose water, milk, tea, or coffee between meals
- Rinse your mouth with water after something acidic
- Wait a little before brushing, and use a soft-bristled toothbrush with a gentle toothpaste
How we can help
Together we identify the source of the acid and put a calm, considered plan in place to protect your teeth. Where significant tooth substance has already been lost, we can restore gently using fillings or crowns — giving your teeth back their comfort and strength.
Questions & answers
FAQ
Can enamel grow back?
Unfortunately not — once enamel is lost, it cannot regenerate. That is why the priority is to stop the damage early and protect the teeth you have. We are well placed to help you do exactly that.
Should I avoid brushing after a fizzy drink?
It is best to wait a little while. Immediately after something acidic, enamel is softer and brushing can cause extra wear. Rinse your mouth with water first, then give it a few minutes before you brush.
