Gum inflammation, or gingivitis, is usually caused by a build-up of bacteria on the tooth surface. It develops quietly over a few days if the teeth are not cleaned thoroughly, and results in red, swollen gums that bleed easily. It is common — and it can be reversed.
What you may notice
- Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
- Redness and mild swelling along the gum line
- Gums that appear more tender than usual
Most cases are harmless as long as they are caught early. If the inflammation is left untreated over a longer period, it can develop into periodontitis, where the bone surrounding the teeth is also affected — which is why it is worth acting early.
