Periodontitis

Periodontitis is an inflammation of the tissue and bone that hold your teeth in place. It often begins as ordinary gum inflammation and progresses slowly — usually without significant pain, which is precisely why it can advance considerably before it is noticed. The good news is that it can be stopped when we catch it in time.

What you may notice

The signs appear quietly, but they are there:

• Gums that are tender and bleed when you brush
• Gums that recede, making your teeth appear longer
• Teeth that shift slightly or become loose
• Tartar along the gumline and persistent bad breath

Smoking, diabetes, and hereditary factors can increase the risk and accelerate the progression.
